Who I Am
Kristin Bernhardt Conrad, Potter/Ceramic Artist
In many old philosophies it is said that we come into the world with a mission, a calling so-to-speak, and it is our job in life to find and develop it, despite the obstacles (which are really lessons and tests of our resolve).
I was not raised in an art-focussed family, though a number of my relatives were Sunday painters and possessed talent. There were two early clues I would pursue the ceramic arts.
The first was when I was 9 years old and my parents stopped at an old restored grain mill for some flour. The woman of the couple who owned it was a potter and sold her work in their shop. I was fascinated with one of her round, lidded ginger jars and used my allowance money to buy it—a budding pottery collector, aged nine! I still have that beautiful jar.
The second was a trip to Brown County Indiana, an artist colony in the rolling hills and forests of southern Indiana near where we lived at the time (we moved a lot). We walked into the open studio of a potter who was throwing simple mugs on the wheel and I was mesmerized! It was as if he was performing magic in front of my eyes turning a lump of mud into something beautiful!
When I was in my late twenties and living near The Craft Alliance in University City, Missouri, I walked by their windows and saw notices for various pottery classes and decided to sign up. Sitting at the pottery wheel I felt happy and at home and learned very quickly. The rest is history. I have studied with many instructors, in many places, including a recent workshop with Steven Hill, and my local clay guru here in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Steve Briggs, who studied with Betty Woodman.
I have found and pursued my calling through raising a family, working a “day job” full time for years, and more! All of my life experience, and my lifelong love of nature and ritual, can be found in my work, and makes it better!
I now have a full-time studio in my long-time home of Nederland, Colorado—high in the Rocky Mountains where everything is the raw, primal force of nature blowing down from those peaks through forests and meadows. These forces and the persevering elements of nature I find thriving, despite wind and snow and short seasons, flow into my work.
